The Kelpie is a mythical horse creature that dwells in the dark depths of sea-lochs. The horse lured people to ride on its back before plunging them into the sea and ultimately to a watery grave. These stories were told as a cautionary tale to children and also used as a way of rationalising the frequent deaths of local fisherman.
